TEAM MRC!!!
We had an OVERWHELMING turnout for the inauguration of our Grass Renovation Project! We had over 25% of themembership of Miami R/C courageously braving the cold weather and the daunting amount of work. The wind was waydown, so we didn't get too cold.
From the road, the first impression you get is, "what are those guys doing down there?
Then, when you get closer, you begin to see the REAL picture...Holy Cow!
Those guys are working HARD!
The organizer of the entire Grass Renovation Project, Tom Bean, was out encouraging everyone and taking the massive amounts of thatch out to the field with the help of the tractor Dewey allowed us to borrow. Thanks, Dewey!
Thanks to our hard-nosed Foreman, Max the Cat, everyone worked exceedingly hard...
Max was somewhat intimidating, which would cause some workers to over-exert themselves and break tools...
Still, everyone put their head down and worked REALLY hard!
Just by the nature of the job, it was a real workout on the shoulders and the forearms. Plus, all the bending over putsome stress on the knees, not to mention the lower back!
This was the tedious work that was involved. Getting all that thatch away from the grass that was there, piling itup and then loading it into the tractor. From this picture, you can see how large the damage is. We had a dozen or sospots like this, with innumerable smaller ones.
Here we have a detailed view of the operations. Guys would rake the thatch up and then load it onto the tractor. Deweywould spread the thatch out over the tilled portion of the field.
Here, Dewey is riding with his daughter. Note that Max theCat is with her. He never lets us have a moment's rest!!!
Because so many guys came out, and every one of them pulled their own weight in only the most industrious of ways, itonly took about 2 hours to complete.
Holy Cow! Sometimes, we don't have this many cars when there's a picnic!
NOW we are ready to plant grass! There were two reasons we had to remove the thatch:
1) Since we are spendingmoney on grass seed, we wanted to make sure it didn't have to fight with the thatch to get down to the ground, or fight toget up through the thatch as it grew.
2) We are using a slicer-seeder. All that thatch would surely clog up the seeder andwe would have to be under it every 20 feet or so trying to unclog it.
Anyway, what a testament to the vibrancy of Miami RC. Our membership is the #1 reason we have been successful forover 50 years. Thank you to everyone who came out and put in some sweat-equity into the grass runway. Now, ourbeautiful field will be even MORE beautiful. Additional information about what comes next will be coming soon.
